8. On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s PQLI was much higher than India’s during this period, though its average GNP per capita was almost the same. Of the two developed countries, both Italy and USA had very high PQLI. But Italy’s average GNP per capita was more than double the USA. In this connection, Morris observes that here is no automatic link between GNP per capita and PQLI. In fact, the presence or absence of social relations, nutritional status, public health, education and family environment determine a society’s PQLI.
