District schools were mediocre. The city assessors in 1910 valued the 25' X 50' lot at $550, and the house at $400. 60 per $100 of evaluation. John Brown, millionaire, resided on North Highland Avenue. His spacious home was surrounded by acres of land, and his children enjoyed the best public schools in the city. In 1910 the assessors valued his land at $202,500, and his home at $54,400. 05 per $100. Finally, an absentee estate owned the 105 acres and rambling house overlooking the Allegheny River Valley.
