Culture as lived experience and culture as selective tradition. Leavis and Eliot had, as we have seen, suggested similar possibilities but their commitment to the notion of common culture was quite different to that of Williams. While they associate culture with lived experience they never really provide a sense of culture being lived by common people. In contrast, Williams argued for a dynamic rather than a passive approach to culture. For him, the ‘distinction of a common culture’ is the collective making by its members, through ongoing common decision making the common culture is constantly ‘made and remade’ (Williams 1958: 337).
Scruton depicts foxhunting as at once natural and extraordinary, offering a release from the mundane existence of civilisation.
