Any anger I felt was overwhelmed by a deep, pervasive sadness. Anger toward myself and other people had always made me afraid. I never really believed that relationships could be resilient enough to allow anger and love to coexist. For years our different emotional responses created a dynamic that played out in our marriage as we tried to reach some kind of emotional balance. I read Rob’s honest expressions of frustration and anger with life as a rejection of Justin. Through that emotional umbilical cord connection between mother and child, it also meant a rejection of me.
As I write this, Sarah is 20 and Philip is 15 and I am pleased by the fact that they have developed into “normal” individuals with their own unique and interesting personalities. I can now see who they have become despite, or because of, having autism in their lives. I am incredibly proud of them. They are sensitive and caring to others who are different from themselves. They respect their brother and are very proud of all he has accomplished. They do not seem resentful or maladjusted in any way, which is a great relief to me.
Siblings need to voice their feelings, both good and bad, about their brother or sister with autism. They may be reluctant to complain for fear they will anger or disappoint their parents. Siblings may be disappointed in themselves for having negative feelings about their brother or sister, making expressing these feelings out loud very difficult. Maureen I gave Michael and Patrick encouragement to honestly express their feelings, so long as they were positive. I wasn’t so good with the negatives.
