The point is that there needs to be some overarching theory about what underlies the child’s behavior, with careful interventions that follow logically from an initial set of assumptions. Equally important, we must be willing to challenge and change our assumptions—and therefore shift interventions—when they appear to be wrong. Children with learning disabilities are notoriously viewed as behavior problems. The perception of them as task-avoidant is sometimes framed as a lack of motivation or caring rather than an understandable—although certainly not constructive—response to their learning challenges.
Certainly, given the growing movement in the adult mental health field toward utilizing client satisfaction reports (Brown, Dreis, & Nace, 1999),13 we should adapt our prevailing techniques to children. What this means, therefore, is that we might ask children how the intervention is working for them. In my many years of consulting, I have never seen this done in any kind of systematic way. Perhaps there is an overriding fear that children will simply trash the plan, especially if they are unsuccessful with it.
Rather than oppositional defiant disorder, I found myself wondering about Asperger’s syndrome instead. Some of the hallmark traits were clear: poor social and pragmatic skills; sensory issues; intense preoccupation with specific topics; and little willingness to engage in what did not interest him. Further investigation into his developmental history revealed a pattern consistent with this diagnosis, including early reading (decoding) skills, relatively poor comprehension, and a perseverative (that is, highly repetitive) interest in specific toys.
