Latching on to unique visual traits for new words becomes more and more difficult, and the process breaks down. The child's logographic reading becomes increasingly marked by errors and wrong guesses. Before children have learned to crack the alphabetic code, their logo graphic reading can be assisted by their knowing the names of the letters of the alphabet. Even though the names of the letters do not provide exact information as to the sounds the letters make, they nonetheless provide the child with valuable clues as to the sounds 'of a word.
