Over the ensuing forty-five years, more than 1,500 children of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic communities have been treated and educated using Reflective Network Therapy. Research colleagues and I have begun to follow up the results and now various teams have twice-tested 69 of those children for IQ. IQ follow ups exist now on a larger number of control (completely untreated) and comparison (otherwise treated) children; (Zelman, 1996; Hope, 1999; Kliman, 2006). The research data provide a strong confirmation of the favorable experiences of therapists, educators, and parents in multiple RNT projects and sites.
This interpersonally based hypothesis and our interpersonally based treatment data contrasts with hypotheses and data from interventions which are symptom-targeted behavioral modifications or chemical treatments. RNT’s combination of education and treatment has demonstrated that autistic children can benefit greatly and quantifiably from this interpersonal method, showing a combination of significant IQ rises (demonstrated by changes in WPPSI-R scores) and global mental health gains (demonstrated by improvements in CGAS scores) scores as well as improvements in Childhood Autism Rating Scales (CARS).
They all showed significant IQ growth. In 1976 I designed, and in 1978 I implemented, a generously funded NIMH study at the same Center, including IQ testing and retesting of the majority of 104 consecutive foster children in the design and actual project. They showed no IQ growth when treated by two forms of non-RNT therapy. The children’s results in this study are now included as a comparison group in statistical consideration of outcomes with the twice tested children treated by Reflective Network Therapy.
