This puts great pressure on other places that think of themselves as peers to match such outlays, even if they have to divert funds from needy fields such as the humanities.

The competitive (entrepreneurial) nature of American higher education stands in sharp contrast to what one often finds elsewhere and is, I believe, a key reason why many American research universities are the best in the world.
