When I read the Gospel of Mark, it seemed to me that Mark could just as well have made Judas the hero of his gospel. The reason is that, if Jesus’ purpose is to come to earth to suffer and die and rise again—which Mark’s gospel says is the most important thing about Jesus, that’s Mark’s whole main point—then Judas has made it possible for him to suffer and die and rise again. And you could easily put a positive twist on it, writing that the other disciples didn’t understand that Jesus needed to die.
So it doesn’t really make a lot of difference if Irenaeus mentioned it, but I suspect that Irenaeus is referring to some other text with the same title.
