My own clinical experience suggests that Intensive Interaction also has potential as a therapeutic approach for W h at is I n t e n s i v e I n t e r ac t i o n ? « 3 3 » people with a range of levels of learning disability (that is, not just people who lack speech) and a variety of psychological/psychiatric problems, but further research is needed to substantiate this. In clinical practice, I do not exclude people because they do not belong to the ‘classic’ groups and have used Intensive Interaction with people, for example, who do have some speech and who are in the moderate range of intellectual disability.
This could be seen as social imaginative thinking. Where some people with ASD struggle with sensory overload from various environments and approaches, the focus of Intensive Interaction is on two individuals exclusively experimenting with communications and social engagement – often having the effect that an over-stimulating environment becomes irrelevant as a result of the total absorption within an interaction. Additionally, once interactive sequences are established some aspects of the interaction can be employed to help a person through other life challenges, for example: Cilla is a young lady with learning disabilities and ASD who finds walking through doorways difficult.
So, who are these practitioners? Are they male or female, introverts or extroverts, relaxed or tense and anxious, are they speech and language therapists, psychologists, occupational therapists, care staff, managers, teachers, parents? There are still a lot of unanswered questions about what makes a good Intensive Interaction practitioner. I have spent a great deal of time trying to identify what I now call the ‘it’ factor, and despite numerous personality tests administered with good and not-so-good practitioners I am no nearer a conclusion.
