Plato invites us to contrast two types of things: those that can be perceived and those that can be conceived but not sensed. These latter are the Forms. The Forms (which are sometimes called Ideas and sometimes Universals) are like mathematical entities in not being accessible to sense perception. They can be regarded as metaphorically embodying the non-material essences of the various types of material, or thing or quality in the world. But for Plato they were more than this because they were the ultimate reality.
