The documents … clearly show that von Verschuer considered Mengele in Auschwitz to be his collaborator. It is irrelevant, that he [Verschuer] later claimed to have known nothing about the murders. The murders happened and are a part of the history of the KWS/MPS. The MPS should recognize that. Yet soon bright summer weather prevailed, before once again increasingly bitter autumn storms replaced the friendly weather. The weather metaphor introduced by Planck, or rather Butenandt, illustrates an important point of departure: for the KWS the years from 1933 until the onset of the massive air raids in 1942/43 were not the struggle for survival, as they claimed after 1945. In fact, the era of the Third Reich was considered a remarkable “success story” for the KWS and its general administration – as measured by the usual parameters of institutional selfportrayal.
This Book This book includes a representative selection of the excellent work produced by the research program inaugurated by Hubert Markl, published for the first time in English. The first section of the book is devoted to research and personnel policies. Rüdiger Hachtmann examines the KWS General Administration – in particular its finance policies and how its highest officials networked within the National Socialist state. This was more of a “Faustian pact” than a “gilded cage” because the KWS mobilized itself for the Third Reich.
