Copies of the inaugural speech reached Charleston, South Carolina, in time to be published in the Times on March 17 and in the City Gazette on March 18. On Thursday afternoon, March 12, the sloop Rising Sun, from Alexander, Virginia, with Captain John Rhodes in command, arrived in Providence, Rhode Island, bringing a copy of Jefferson’s inaugural speech. On Saturday, March 14, the Providence Gazette, published by John Carter, printed the complete text of the address. Meanwhile, mail arriving in Boston on Friday night, March 13, brought copies of the text of Jefferson’s speech to that city, and it was published in the Columbian Centinel, a Federalist paper, the following day.
