Further, visual processing deficits are unlikely to be associated with the problems in broader areas of functioning noted earlier. Research into automaticity (Nicolson & Fawcett, 1994, Dyslexia in the Adult Years 19 1995, Fawcett & Nicolson, 2008) has focused on the apparent failure of dyslexic people to develop a number of skills to an automatic level, including working memory, motor skills and literacy, thus taking a wider perspective.
It is perhaps inevitable that they thrive on courses and in jobs where there are fewer demands on language-based activities. It has also been suggested that dyslexics might deliberately choose creative courses and occupations as a way of avoiding reading and writing (Alexander-Passe, 2006; Wolf & Lundberg, 2002). Having reviewed a number of studies Bacon and Handley (2010) concluded that the evidence for enhanced visual spatial ability amongst dyslexics is equivocal, but pointed out that there is also little evidence for a visual spatial deficit.
Dyslexia in the Adult Years 15 Behavioural Characteristics: Empirical Evidence There are a number of systematic studies that have shown how some of the behavioural and affective characteristics described above persist into adult years. These include problems with all aspects of literacy, numeracy and academic performance generally. There are also studies that have considered occupational outcomes, as well as emotional development (see Gerber, 2012 for a review). Not enough research has been conducted and many studies are based on samples of individuals in emerging adulthood.
