As a psychologist, I have devoted a lot of time to considering the many meanings of touch and the use of space in different interpersonal and cultural circumstances. So much has been written about power and intimacy, gender and ethnicity, and the ways that they express themselves through touch. To members of cultures that touch more and come closer physically, Americans often appear somewhat cold and distant. To those who touch less than we do and maintain greater distance, we may appear too eager to be friendly.

What would that be like? For one thing, I could be a professional woman without the intense effort that goes into looking like one. I did not have to struggle to create an image of a competent and intelligent woman, combining strength and softness, assuredness and understanding, toughness and nurturance.
