As I argued earlier, ethnocultural nationalism is one of two categories of nationalist ideologies. Each of these categories of ideologies could have and in fact has had various offshoots that differ widely from one another. Cultural nationalism has had a variety of forms. Inter alia, these include liberal and fascist, socialist and conservative, humanist and antihumanist versions as well as chauvinist and egalitarian, collectivist and individualistic, ethnocentric and non-ethnocentric, state-seeking and nonstate-seeking forms of nationalism.

As already indicated, some of them did in fact think that historical rights justify sovereignty, whereas others were to some degree aware of the fact that historical rights as such could not constitute a basis for demanding territorial sovereignty. However, I am not concerned with the historical question of what actual demands were made by the Zionist standards. In other words, even if one could assume that references by Zionist leaders to a historical right to establish a national home for the Jews within Palestine rather than a Jewish state encompassing Palestine in its entirety were tactically rather than strategically motivated, nonetheless, the very adoption of such a tactic seems to express acknowledgment of the fact that these are the morally appropriate terms.

The response to this argument is, first, that if this contention is true, then a similar contention is also true with regard to ethnocultural nationalism. The latter is commonly accused of ugly and even criminal historical manifestations. However, it could be argued that these historical manifestations of cultural nationalism are not necessary consequences of the implementation of this ideology. Second, it is doubtful whether, given the geodemographic conditions of the world, it could seriously be maintained that the practice of forced assimilation is not a necessary consequence of the ideology of civic nationalism.
