Validity of Distinction between Truancy and School Refusal Although the bulk of the psychiatric literature makes a clear distinction between truancy and school refusal, its validity has been questioned (Tyerman, 1968). T h e argument is not about the existence of poor attenders who have the characteristics described in the literature. Disagreement centres on the question whether these are discrete diagnostic categories, or merely opposite poles on the same continuum. T h e distinction is of more than academic importance.
SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES Case Studies Willis (1977) carried out a participant observation study of twelve nonacademic working class boys from a school in the centre of England which he called Hammertown Boys. Selection was based on the fact that all twelve were friends, and were members of "some kind of oppositional culture" in a working class school. In other words, they saw themselves as belonging to an anti-authority sub-group, and were seen in this light by teachers. "This opposition", Willis vividly demonstrated "is expressed mainly as a style.
Jones also acknowledges the possible influence of powerful sub cultures within the school which require truancy as a token of non-conformity with the "enemy".
