The aetiology of deafness and hence the quality of the auditory signal, the age at which the hearing loss is identified and appropriate aids fitted, the language input available before and after optimal aiding, the child’s intellectual ability and familial and educational factors all combine to influence language development.
Thus, at the primary school level, deaf children are often empowered to develop a sense of security, mastery and positive self-esteem. However, these very small deaf peer groups may work to the child’s disadvantage in the transition process. Often a deaf child will be the only one in their year group, and the primary school where their hearing-impaired unit is located may not be a ‘feeder’ school for the secondary school that has provision for deaf children. Therefore, they may not transfer to the same secondary school as any of their classmates, losing both their hearing and deaf peer group.
Many parents express their feelings of helplessness in communicating instructions and explanations to their child, sometimes to the point where they give up trying. There is some research evidence that mothers of children with profound hearing losses are more likely to use physical discipline in response to unwanted behaviours than mothers of hearing children (Knutson, Johnson and Sullivan 2004), and this is certainly our impression clinically.
