OUf academic cosmopolitans cannot just 'add on' social relationships to their experience ofthe world. On the contrary, against the present flow of cultural studies, one hears the voices of those who would restore the perspective of society, world system, and" so forth, and with it fresh questions about the social relations of domination and power and the social objects people make out of their interactions. Fabian (1983), among others, has argued that an anthropologist's own awareness of the objects created by their study cannot 'work' in his or her accounts until the subjects of the study are also seen to exist as coeval presences.
That earlier perception belonged to a world structured by divisions and dichotomies, where, in struggling to be free of machines, people perceived themselves to be dominated by them. She adds, "The machine is not an it to be animated, worshipped and dominated. The machine is us, our processes, an aspect of our embodiment" (1985:99, original emphasis). Machines do not replicate human experience and Haraway is not saying that organisms are modelled on machines. On the contrary, the point is to see a difference.
