The first few chapters examine how Bell and Gallaudet opposed each other in their roles as champions of the different methods of teaching deaf children. This requires a close look at their political styles, their frequent and dramatic confrontations, and their stormy personal relationship. The later chapters explore some of the reasons why the men clung so fervently to their particular philosophies. Their deep commitments can only be explained by examining their very powerful beliefs. Both Bell and Gallaudet kept journals and diaries, and Bell preserved a large collection of private correspondence.
Despite Weld's counterattack, after 1843 the demand for oral schools grew. The first oral schools, however, were not established until the 1860s. The New York Institution for the Improved Instruction of Deaf-Mutes (now the Lexington School for the Deaf) and the Clarke Institution for Deaf-Mutes (in Northampton, Massachusetts) were the first oral schools for deaf children in the United States. The Clarke School is particularly important for this study because it is where Alexander Graham Bell gained entrée into the world of deafness.
