5. The Mainstream Classroom as a Language-learning Environment. To what extent will second-language learners flourish in mainstream classrooms? In what follows, we assess the extent to which such classrooms might fulfil some of the conditions of the ideal 'facilitating' environment set out in the previous section. Because classrooms vary enormously, both within and across the four countries which we are dealing with, we will look separately at the primary and secondary sectors and take into account further variables such as teaching style and subject-matter.
