Flynn and a colleague (Dickens and Flynn 2001) have suggested a rather complex mechanism. They suggest that intellectual ability is enhanced by the increasing intellectual demands of the environment, particularly an increased need for on-the-spot problem solving. In addition, the environment has gradually become more intellectually demanding, as a result of being designed by a more intellectually able population. However, this model would predict that the intellectual gains would not start until a child began to interact with their environment in an intellectual way, which really does not start until the age of about two years.
Second, it is also possible that the more intelligent children would do better in school and so want to have more education. This illustrates another important statistical point, which is that correlations do not show causality. In this case it is not clear if a better education results in higher scores on IQ tests or whether higher innate intelligence results in children achieving a higher level of education. This issue is discussed in more detail in Chapter 6 on the causes of intellectual disability 30 Intellectual Disability but, briefly, the current evidence suggests that an individual’s level of intellectual ability is partially due to genetic factors and in part due to what has happened to them over their life.
