This can lead to: nystagmus, where there is involuntary, rapid, side-to-side or up and down movement of the eyes; strabismus, where the two eyes are not aligned with each other; this results in cross-eyes where the two eyes cannot look at the same time at one object; and amblyopia (lazy eye), where the child suppresses the use of one of his eyes. These conditions can cause eye fatigue and headaches if the child overextends himself, for example through reading (Lodge 1999). There are a very small number of children with severe visual and physical difficulties.
In terms of appropriate education, opportunity structures are not confined to the local mainstream school. The paradox is that a family may believe that normalisation for their child (and family) can best happen if the child is at a special school or unit. How a family decides whether appropriate schooling is mainstream or special is returned to later in the chapter. These opportunities may change, for example, if a family moves, if they meet helpful professionals, or if there is promotion at work.
In the teacher’s case it is also the extra time required for teaching; resources, in terms of equipment in the classroom; adaptations to the school; and finally, the new skills required to understand and manage successfully the child’s physical difficulties. In a similar way to the parents, teachers also face the dilemma of not knowing what way of teaching this child will be most successful. Recognising the parallel issues for parents and teachers provides a basis for a bond of understanding.
