What we call pedagogical documentation will be described as an apparatus of knowing that produces different kinds of knowledge depending on the ontological and/or epistemological perspectives we bring with us in our usage of it. I will use three different examples of observing and documenting children’s learning and development in this chapter. Chapter 4 deals with and exemplifies practising investigative learning processes with children, using the tool of pedagogical documentation. Pedagogical documentation is used ‘methodologically’ by putting in motion a ‘circular’ and a ‘horizontal’ movement.
This could mean understanding theory and practice as decomposed or dissolved into what can be understood as inter-dependent powerful flows of mutual constitutive forces in constant intra-action with each other. These forces are impossible to separate from each other, nor can their boundaries be clearly defined (Barad, 2007). This thinking does not, however, imply that we give up practices of theoretical thinking 24 Theory/practice and discourse/matter divides or engaging in practising pedagogy.
In a more complex way of understanding it, from the viewpoint of the material, the material matters and intra-acts with the boys in their play and their continuously displaced understandings of the sticks. , to the wider and expanded gaze from the point of view of the swirl and rustle of the paper and its intra-action with the discursive understandings.
