CHAPTER FOUR The Settlement Geography of Gush Emunim Settlement as a means of attaining political aims is not a new device. The Crusaders in the Holy Land, the Chinese in Manchuria, and the British in India, for instance, took such action in countries they conquered in order to deepen their hold. Thus the rise in the Judea-Samaria region, of a group of religious nationalists called Gush Emunim, reflecting aspirations of circles in Israel interested in rapid settlement of the territories conquered in 1967 should be regarded as part of a geopolitical process and current condition of conquest obtaining in part of ‘the Land of Israel’ (Eretz Yisrael).
The settlers reached Hebron in April 1968 and leased the Park Hotel there on the pretext that they wished to spend the Passover holiday in that city of the patriarchs.
