35 According to the Alfred University study, hazing varies among sports teams with football players, swimmers, divers, lacrosse players, and water polo players reporting more than athletes in other sports in the survey. Students involved in tennis, fencing, and track reported the least amount of hazing. They also found that 42% of those who endured hazing in college said they were also hazed in high school. Hazing rituals inevitably vary from team to team but a common process has been observed.
But increasingly it has become the domain of sports teams, and not just college sports teams but high school (and to a lesser extent professional teams) as well. In 2000, Alfred University in conjunction with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) surveyed about 10,000 athletes at 224 colleges about their high school experiences. The survey showed that hazing is more common than previously thought. 5 million high school students being hazed each year. 32 Hazing can take many forms but is typically associated with rituals or activities required for initiation into an organization.
However, as time goes by the idea that high school athletic participation is the way to build character and avoid criminal behavior is coming under attack both by the growing number of incidents in the media and also by academic research.
