As already mentioned, if Floyd was indeed suffering from appendicitis and if the appendix was in danger of bursting or had burst, liberally dosing him with the strong laxative pills of Dr. Benjamin Rush (known as "Thunderclappers" because of their powerful purgative effect) would have only worsened his condition. But this was what Lewis had been trained to do and Clark would have concurred with what his partner administered. It was Whitehouse who specifically identified Lewis as the one prescribing medicine to the stricken sergeant.
T h e explorers wanted this "prized" item back and tried to buy it from that Indian, but he was on the point of death and his family wanted to bury it with him. George Drouillard and two Nez Perces conducted the negotiations for the tomahawk's return. T h e family was finally persuaded to sell it, but they sold it dear, receiving a handkerchief and two strands of beads from the Corps' supply of goods and two horses from the chiefs. "Capt.
