The Greek cit. texts of a number of troparia can be found in Christ and Paranikas, MUSIC OF THE EASTERN CHURCHES 20 Christ to his people, are so similar as to suggest that they are in dependent paraphrases of a common original. One of these troparia, aravp& (When on the Cross), has been preserved in a bilingual version, with the Latin text 'O quando in cruce', in Beneventan manuscripts of the eleventh century.
Spiritual revival began; churches were built and monasteries were founded; historians wrote annals to bring back the glory of the past to the memory of their contempo A raries. The writings of the theologians covered every field from mysticism to polemics. Philosophy, rhetoric, and philology flourished again. The monks began to embellish the music of the hymns with fioriture. The balance of words and music, so characteristic of the great period of Byzantine hymnography, was destroyed in favour of the music, which began to abound in lavish ornamentation.
It has survived surpassed hymn uncurtailed in the service of the Orthodox Church up to the present day. The Acathistus (J4fca0ioros) is a hymn of praise in honour of the Blessed Virgin, who saved Constantinople by a miracle. Until lately the hymn was unhesitatingly ascribed to the Patriarch Sergius, and it was assumed that the hymn was written as a kind of thanksgiving to the Virgin. P. Maas, however, pointed out that the hymn itself shows the style of an earlier period and that only the prooemium may have been composed on the day of the raising of the siege by the enemy.
