Then the principal chief of the Kiowas arose to talk. He was a young man named To-hauson, who had been elevated to principal chieftainship as successor to Ah-da-te. The latter had been deposed after the Cutthroat Massacre. To-hauson was a man of magnetic personality, with great natural ability as a leader. He remained principal chief of his people until his death in 1866.

Probably my best informant was Mr. William H. Quinette, who came to Fort Sill in 1878 and was post trader to 1915. I lived at his home during the summer of 1934, and we spent the long summer evenings on the porch of his home in Lawton while he reminisced about his experiences at Fort Sill. We also made many trips over the area to enable him to point out historic spots. He had been well acquainted with Horace P. Jones, the post interpreter for many years, who had given him much first-hand information.

I was able to secure an ambulance from the post for this purpose, and my action was deeply appreciated by the Indians. On the death of Mrs. S. Indian scout she was entitled to this honor. Two officials of the school attended the funeral. The Kiowas were greatly impressed, and word of this attention spread through the tribe and to other tribes. From then on I had no difficulty. The door was opened to me for many interviews of old Indians, and much valuable source material was obtained. George Hunt became my guide, interpreter, and close friend.
