A major implication for scientists is that it is essential for them to design practices which minimize up-front costs of adoption (labour, capital and land). The simplest and most effective economic method available for quantifying these processes for specific agroforestry practices is private cost–benefit analysis. It encompasses the computation of the NPV of a practice, from the perspective of an individual farmer. Very useful insights into the probability of adoption of a practice can be gained by: (i) comparing the NPV of an agroforestry option with the NPV of other land-use options of relevance to farmers; (ii) undertaking a sensitivity analysis of NPV; and (iii) estimating the break-even point of an agroforestry option.
