Our own death absolutely confronts us with the reality that this is a story. Other people’s deaths can also confront us with that. It is precisely the existence of death in the dream that makes so many of us make up these wild, wild stories about the things that must be achieved and the heavens that must be aimed for. For a person, death is quite a challenge, so to avoid contemplating its own annihilation, the mind makes up the most wonderful and bizarre stories about an entity that continues after death in some way.
Then it’s seen that the ‘you’ in the dream who felt so real was just an appearance. This day-time dream is like racing for the train in the night-time dream for as long as there is the sense of a person. But in awakening it is seen through. Sometimes during the day-time you suddenly wake up just as you might in the night. Not permanently but for a little while. During the day we may be taking something very seriously and then suddenly we might see through it. We may be terribly angry and then we might catch sight of the cat walking across the room and the anger can just be gone.
One common thing that happens with spiritual paths is that there is a confusion between cause and effect. It is sometimes noticed when liberation is seen that the energy of thought may dissipate. There may be fewer thoughts, quieter thoughts, less energised thoughts. It may also be noticed when liberation is seen that it’s possible for a certain detachment to arise. After all, if I’m not taking the story seriously anymore, that might produce some detachment. These are possible consequences of liberation, they don’t necessarily occur.
