Not only was he unwilling to share the limelight with his old friend, by 1959 the composer’s ties with French ballet and his friendship with Lifar had long ceased. Stravinsky enjoyed the companionship of some of the preeminent writers living in or visiting Hollywood around the same time: T. S. He shared several evenings with Mann, for example, and their conversations were often substantive, especially regarding religion.
While certainly his accolades were always deserved, the success of others accorded equal praise often appeared inexplicable. He would have concurred with Jean Cocteau’s sardonicism: “I believe in luck. ” Even when Stravinsky expressed regard for his collaborators, a recognition of his personal assistance was always demanded. He clipped and saved a 1927 article appearing shortly after the premiere of his and Cocteau’s Oedipus Rex. ” The composer was offended, underlining the sentence, circling Cocteau’s name, and writing a question mark next to it, implying that Cocteau had been accorded far too much credit.
