I remember one guy who was literally split open. It was crazy. It was surreal. After such scenes, I would smoke five cigarettes in a row. It felt like I was watching a movie; it was pretty scary and sick. Things like hearing wounded guys scream “I want to see my kids. I want to see my wife” really affected me. I saw shot children and dead children as well as dead soldiers. A turning point for me was one day when I saw a pudgy, little girl.
In an important sense, the views of these veteran resisters are inseparable from the Bush administration’s mistakes and occasional manipulations. The administration’s misleading justifications for the invasion provide ample ammunition for these antiwar veterans. Any history of the war can not call itself complete without the inclusion of their voices. In my experience with these oppositional veterans, I have for the most part discovered a group of generally well-informed resisters who are often The New Winter Soldiers Redux / 29 acutely aware of opinion polls, administration strategy and world affairs.
