It was they who practised and preserved, even to the present, many of the cultural traditions of their ancestors, as can be seen in their attitudes to religion, language, folklore, music, marriage and family life. The negative effect has been the relegation of blacks with their cultural expressions to the lowest position of the social structure. The positive effect is that the social outcast status has allowed this group to retain and preserve the vibrant and indigenous heritage that has perhaps sustained and strengthened its members.
This gave me insight into the journey from folk to art music. From the Royal College of Music, I gained the Associate of the RCM diploma for piano performance. In my spare time I went to dance and drama classes and even appeared in a West End play. I thoroughly enjoyed performing on BBC radio and for student and community events. I had gained the Licentiates of the Royal Schools of Music (piano performing) in Jamaica in 1944. Later they were followed by the Licentiateship and the Fellowship from Trinity College for piano and the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music in singing.
The New African Orthodox Church was established in the United States of America in 1921. Racial pride, spiritual redemption and return to the ancestral promised land (One Aim, One God, One Destiny) were thus interlocking tenets of Garveyism [Eaton 1975: 21]. In 1925 he was imprisoned on questionable charges of mail fraud and tax evasion, and then expelled from the USA in 1927. Back in Jamaica, Garvey continued to work towards furthering his plans which, according to his widow Amy Jacques Garvey [1963: 262], were built around three fundamentals: 1.
