Rigidity may also reflect the difficulty of achieving emotional discharge if only the secondary target is addressed and not the original source of psychological distress. This presumes the "artificiality" of the emotions associated with the target of the displacement. Impairment of working ability may be the result of the "neurotic inca pacity to concentrate or arrive at conclusions" (Lasswell, 1948b/1976, p. 95) that could arise from the whole range of repressions and other psy chodynamic mechanisms, such as obsessive thought disorders, ambiva lence, and persistence of no-longer-relevant behaviors (perseveration).
By over-determined, Lasswell meant that the same outcome has multiple, mutually reinforcing causes. This principle, also termed multi-functionalism or multiple determination and most extensively elaborated by Robert Waelder (1936, 1963), was adopted by Freud in his later writings (1917/1935). Lasswell, having kept abreast of the advances in psychoanalytic theory, must have recognized the broadening of the causal models that Freud and others in the psycho analytic movement were embracing. The key point here is that Lasswell, along with the maturing psycho analytic theory, recognized that the unconscious as well as the conscious have to be analyzed.
