In this manner it is easy to avoid a side movement of the hand, which generally becomes necessary when the one-five and one-four fingering is employed. Small hands must necessarily take the first and fifth fingers. Sequences of legato notes, not following in succession, but in large intervals, must be played in the same manner. Each octave must be held as long as possible, the next one following with the greatest rapidity. In studying our sonata, this should be brought to as great perfection as is possible.
The turn in the eighth measure, to which particular attention should be given, is to be played on the first beat, with relaxed fingers and the greatest of evenness. The following E is the softest tone in the measure, and it is taken precisely together with the bass notes. In the left hand the necessary equality of the volume and length of tones is guaranteed by the long lever of the arm. Attention should be given also to the volume of tone in the different chords. In the ninth measure the left hand should practice the staccato notes of the broken chord, and the following triplet.
In many cases, of course, opinions of professionals differ, in regard to correct execution. It is possible that the musical terms dictated by the composer are felt to be insufficient, but they undoubtedly help in finding out the correct way in which the composer wished his works to be interpreted. I, myself, have found that there are not so many disputable interpretations, and that the opinions of musicians with a natural sense of feeling do not vary so greatly.
