Activity analysis or sampling has been given a number of other names. Chapter 10 describes this technique as work sampling, occurrence sampling, and ratio delay. Essentially, the technique requires observations on an operation where specific activities are identified as they are observed. For those reasons, models play an important role in ergonomic design. But models cannot be expected to be accurate under all circumstances. The reader should be forewarned that incorrect models can lead people to commit logical fallacies or misunderstand relationships. 17 Before going further with a discussion of relevant ergonomic models, it should be stated that behavior and performance are distinctly different notions. Behavior is what an individual does; performance is how well something is done relative to a standard.

Other important criteria in contemporary industry include safety and health. Workplaces must be safe places today. Years ago this was not an issue in many factories, where managers exhibited little concern for the health and welfare of their employees. With the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a direct governmental body now watches over these criteria.
