Our brains do all our thinking, Page 9 reasoning and planning, store all our memories, control all our physical actions, such as walking, talking, hearing, seeing, eating, sleeping and breathing, and control all our feelings. Our brains are our control and command centre connected by the spinal cord and a network of nerves to our whole body, from the tips of our toes to the top of our head. They are far more complicated than the most sophisticated computer system in the world. Under normal circumstances we do not give this silent service a second thought.
My involvement with head injury has largely been inspired by Roseanne Barnett, mother of a head-injured son and the co-ordinator of our local Headway support group and Headway Day Centre. Her voice has been echoing in my head while i have written this book. I hope i have managed to convey some of her wisdom. I do not profess to have first-hand experience of either the struggle of the person with the head injury, or the emotional turmoil of the family, but i feel i have gained an Page ix understanding of head injury by listening to many stories of great courage and determination during my 10 years' involvement with our district clinical psychology service and Headway.
