This type of picking is commonly used in all styles of music, but particularly in classical tunes or where it is important to keep a solid bass line going.

The Thumb (primary finger) plucks the bass strings in an downwards direction whilst the fingers pluck the appropriate string in an upwards direction. This is why this method of playing is sometimes called pinching. A bar above the finger pattern, P A signifies the two fingers being used at the same time.
