Legal sanctions may be invoked to ensure that the infected individual is indeed treated medically. Society may, for example, provide publically supported services for the mentally ill, especially when they are a danger to themselves or others. Family planning services and immunization against common communicable diseases are further examples of socially determined need.
In a CBA where the benefits are dissimilar, the costs are usually assessed and expressed in monetary units and the "values" or relative worth of the benefits being compared are also expressed to the extent possible in monetary units.
